Meta has announced plans to cut 10 percent of its work force, or roughly 8,000 employees. This is part of their plan to double down on AI.
More controversially, they are allegedly asking their US based employees to install tracking software that captures their mouse movements, clicks and keystrokes. Reuters have reported that this software will train AI systems at Meta to better replicate how humans interact with computers.
I think we’re already seeing where this is leading. The big tech firms have begun a programme of mass lay offs in 2026.
Given that these are arguably the firms who have the greatest understanding of how AI can replace humans in the workplace, is this the canary in the coal mine?
Whatever you think of AI and its role in the workplace, it’s clear that the march of the robots won’t be stopping anytime soon. In fact, they might be looking over your shoulder right now.
